April 26 2009
I started watching the GFS and NAM model’s on Monday , it was easy to see a multi- day set up for chasing . I was not able to chasing the Saturday due to family plan’s , so I was up till 3 a.m. watching a big tornado north of Enid , Ok. on TV and going over model’s . Sunday morning a upgrade to a High risk was made and hard push was started to get to Altus as fast as we could. Left Sulphur around noon and made Altus around 2:30. After we got to town , we stopped at the gas station just in town and talked to chaser’s from KOCO and KSWO which was cool . After a quick data check and a call from Neil , we started moving north toward Sayre . After we reached Mangum Ok. which was having a Rattlesnake Carnival , we started seeing chaser’s head south . After getting data we headed back to Altus .We drove around south of town we headed west of town .Watched the first cell move through town with a nice wall cloud produce a large funnelthat was about ¾ the way to the ground over Altus Air Force Base . Called the funnel in and watched it fall apart . Caught the second cell as it took almost the same path. Watched as a nice rain free area produced many funnels as it pasted over Altus . ( no siren ever sounded and no warning? ) Watched the area until we moved to Snyder then north to Roosevelt Ok. where we gave up and started are return to Sulphur . Drove through a strong storm
west of Lawton , the lightning show was incredible !
Got home around 11:00 p.m. Almost feel this was a waste of a high risk and a PDS Tornado Watch .
Mile’s : 475
Time : 11 hour’s
Hail : none
Tornado’s : none
Funnels : more than I can count
